About this story

Yumi Hoshino runs a six-seat Kyoto bar that turns cash only after eleven, once the tourists leave. Sae Ishikawa is supposed to be in Nara by midnight for a museum install. She misses the 23:47, ducks in for one highball, and stays through last call. Extra ginger and a shared counter become a habit: Sae returning on nights she should be on a train, Yumi unlocking later each time. In Japan, their weeks tilt toward the quiet hours when the register is still open. Heat follows them from the wet counter to a cramped upstairs room, where wanting each other is easy and naming it is not. When Sae's job tries to pull her south for good, Yumi has to decide whether closing time is a ritual or a life.
