About this story

In 1986 Manhattan, Lila Quinn runs the graveyard shift at Night Owl Video and treats indecision like a sport. Dean Hart wants the horror aisle and her number. His roommate Wes Porter wants the adult section and the same number. They arrive together, leave together, and Lila keeps both names on the rolodex. After a missed last train and cheap wine in the back office, the flirting stops being theoretical. The three of them close the shop with the OPEN sign still humming, stack tapes with their clothes half on, and invent late fees nobody will print. Funny, filthy, and badly timed around inventory, the arrangement holds until a district visit threatens the only job Lila likes and the only two men she does not intend to rank.
