Sixty-three days into NASA’s 1983 Liberty increment, Commander Harper Dane mutes the S-band, raps on Sloane Keita’s sleep-station hatch, and hits record. In microgravity the slaps land wrong, the flesh keeps moving, and the compact cassette catches every wet sound while Houston stays dark. Six hours later Sloane cinches Harper to the solar-physics rack, forces a confession onto tape, and rides her mouth through a routine battery query. They wait for orbital night to play the cassettes back in the galley. An unscheduled CAPCOM call nearly ends them. The tapes are labeled PAYLOAD and hidden. For the remaining nineteen days they find each other whenever the loop goes quiet, but they never risk the deck again. On the last sleep period they listen once more at a whisper, then Sloane tucks the worn oxide into Harper’s flight-home bag. Next increment, they promise.
