Paloma Duarte inherited Duarte Ridge, two hundred isolated acres of vines above Sonoma, and she runs it like a private kingdom. Mateo Rivas lives in the staff cottage, clocks in for irrigation, frost fans, and whatever else she orders. He is on her payroll. That is the problem. Their attraction starts in the rows at dusk and turns into a private arrangement she should never allow: she tells him when, where, and how, and he answers because she is the lady of the house. Her circle would call it slumming. The county would call it a lawsuit. Paloma will not pretend they are equals, and Mateo does not ask her to. Harvest tightens the pressure. Gossip travels. A buyer circles the land. They end together on her terms: the land, the payroll, and a ring she pays for.
